Building the School

So I’ve been working on the preschool for a week now. The opening is scheduled for the 20th of September, 2010. We had to move it up a couple weeks. We will start the school off with 6 children 5 days a week. We hope to have 15 to 20 children once we get rolling in this location, with added summer camps & activities open to a much larger audience.

In building the school area, we are again continuing to use as much recycled materials as we can. Presently I’m using all the old warped scaffolding wood & pallets the landlord left around the house. It’s a challenge working with these materials as any straight edge is nearly impossible. I’d like to say it’s because of my extreme environmental conviction that I am using these materials, but to be honest it’s simply because we have a budget tighter than… well one of Danny’s medium size T-shirts. Right now we have a projection of about 600 euros to get the job done. That is if we can get most of the material donated or at a severe discount.

-We need about 80 square meters of flooring, it seems laminate is the best option for us, being cheap & durable.
-Paint & varnish. We will paint most of the lower walls with a chalk board paint so the kids can color on the walls. How freakin’ cool is that!
-School books, furniture, tables, chairs.
We have about 200 Euros donated so far, so please if anybody has any change under their sofa, or in a jar on top of their fridge or a wad of cash hidden in their freezer, we won’t be upset if you send some this way to help us with the school project.

The idea of the school is completely non-profit. The teachers won’t be working for a salary, but will be volunteering their time. Though we will have to charge a small amount, it will be just to cover expenses. That is, unless we can find sponsors for the school that will help keep us open completely for free. The school will provide a safe environment for children to play, grow and learn. As well as early reading, writing and arithmetic skills, our curriculum will include music, dance, art, practical life skills, social development and Christian ethics.
We appreciate your help, prayers and support for this project, we wouldn’t be able to do it without you. You’ll be hearing more from us soon.
